ANALYTICAL REASONING

Analytical Reasoning means working through a process to clearly assess a situation, develop a point of view, and a course of action. It's a skill that everyone needs.

It enables The New Playbook by giving us a way to think about the world and gain clarity. And, in so doing, it helps us to move towards better performance, growth, and results.

In this video from my course on customer centricity I highlight the importance of asking the right questions and looking at the data.

Let's dive a little bit deeper into the idea of asking those questions and how to put them to work.

Questions that begin with what and who have superpowers. They help to unveil different angles on a situation. So use those as prompts to start to bring meaning to what you're working with.

For example:
What is working?
What are my options?
What am I not clear about?
Who cares about this?
Who might be struggling with this?
Who needs the most help ?

And, WHY has extra superpowers because it can help you to see what's at the root of an issue.

What can you do with these questions? Use them to empower your analytical reasoning by allowing them to shape your dialog about what you're working on. For example, write a memo. Write a press release. Write a letter. By answering these questions in such a format you're putting your rationale down on paper. Then as you read it back to yourself it becomes clear what's still fuzzy.

And, want to take that to the next level? Then take a walk around the block or work on something else and come back to it. A little bit of space can actually make space for greater cognition.

Once you have taken it as far as you can on your own have someone else read it. Or, better yet - read it aloud to them. You might hear little chinks in your logic that they miss. Either way, it's great to get different points of view and bring others into the conversation.
